Courage in Action: Overcoming Fear, One Step at a Time
Edition #3: February 5th, 2025
Verse I Like:
“A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.”
Quick Hit:
When I am scared or hesitant to take that risk into what I have been called to, I find it inspiring to think about my demise. One day, I will die. I need to empty my tank of all that I can while I am still alive.
To put it in perspective, I went to a funeral the other day and the man’s eulogy was as follows:
Born in 194X, worked at X Company for 26 years, is survived by his family: Name 1, Name 2, etc.
~80 years, and his eulogy was a paragraph. This is a reminder that what seems pressing and like a huge scary task, is often less so in the final analysis.
This reference, however, is not to insinuate that there is no purpose to live. You have to find your purpose to justify the suffering. But take comfort in the perspective.
Regret is often far more potent than failure. So all this to say, take that step to enter into your future.
Quotes I Like:
"It is not the strength of the body that counts, but the strength of the spirit."
"It isn’t the mountains ahead to climb that wear you down. It’s the pebble in your shoe."
"Courage is grace under pressure."
Courage Breakdown
4 steps to cultivate courage in the moment:
Pause and Breathe - focus on your breath, and give yourself a moment to regain composure. Deep breathing calms your nervous system and helps you regain control over your emotions, allowing you to act more clearly.
Challenge Your Thoughts - Ask yourself: "What’s the worst that could happen?" and "Can I handle it?" Often, our fears are exaggerated. Rationalizing the situation helps reduce anxiety and puts things in perspective.
Shift Focus to Action - Break the task down into the smallest possible action. Commit to taking just one step forward. Focusing on small actions reduces overwhelm and creates momentum, making the fear less intimidating.
Visualize Success and Act - Visualize yourself succeeding in the situation, then take that first step towards the outcome you want. Visualization gives your brain a positive outcome to latch onto, making action feel more achievable.
Weekly Writing Prompt
Write about a time when you faced a fear or obstacle that seemed insurmountable. What was going through your mind in the moment? How did you find the courage to take action, and what did you learn from the experience? Reflect on how this moment shaped your view of courage. Also, consider how small it seems today.
