The Cost of Moving Forward
Weekly Edition #59: March 11th, 2026
Verse I Like:
“But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, will receive a light beating. Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.”
Weekly Dose
When we strive for our goals, there is often an assumption that things will settle down or become easier once achieved.
Not the case.
Not in my personal life, not in traditional wisdom, and not in ancient narratives have I found this to be true.
In fact, it often seems to be the opposite. Achievement usually brings more responsibility. Rarely less.
Think about many of the milestones in people’s lives: graduation, promotions, marriage, higher status, owning a business.
Each one places an additional responsibility on the person.
We' are not being tricked into wanting these things. We are aiming upward.
Quotes I Like:
“Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.”
“Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.”
“The task of leadership is not to put greatness into humanity, but to elicit it, for the greatness is already there.”
Mane Message

In the Book of Joshua, Israel finally arrives at the edge of the Jordan River.
The edge of the promised land.
After forty years of wandering, the people are on the verge of what they are to inherit.
When the priests step into the Jordan carrying the Ark, the river stops and the people cross on dry ground. A miracle marks the moment.
Yet the miracle is not the completion of the story.
The wilderness was a place of survival. God provided manna. Their direction was given day by day. Their task was mostly to endure.
The land would require something different.
Conquering. Planting. Building. Governing. Defending.
The Jordan was not crossed so that Israel could finally relax. It was crossed so that Israel could finally become a nation.
A nation has duties. Far more duties that a homeless wandering people.
This seems to be a pattern that repeats itself throughout life.
We often imagine that once we reach a certain milestone, the difficulty will fade. But many of life’s most meaningful achievements come with a to-do list.
Responsibility tends to grow alongside opportunity.
Achievement rarely removes responsibilities and burdens. It transforms them.
Success is a process, and achievement is a doorway.
Weekly Ponder
Are we prepared for the weight that often comes with the things that we plead for?
Is the most noble and worthwhile goal really to escape responsibility, or to become the person that is capable of bearing a heavy load? And bearing it well?
