The Faithful Search for Purpose: Navigating Life’s Journey
Edition #2: January 29th, 2025
Verse I Like:
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”
Quick Hit: Note from My Journal
I am susceptible to needing a level of planning and assurance that can nearly become obsessive and ‘faith-lacking.’ In my experience, to counteract this, it is best to ‘walk the line.’ There is a balance between ‘leaping’ for unearned favors (warned against in the temptations of Christ) and sinking into a faithless level of comfort and safety.
Be careful not to confuse a hedonistic whim with a required ‘leap of faith’ from the one who calls you to adventure. There is an insistence in the bible that a true calling will ‘burn’ to your core (Moses, Jeremiah, Isaiah, Elijah, Pentecost, etc.). You have two options: respond or not. It seems a response will produce the adventure of your life.
Quotes I Like:
"The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why."
"He who has a why to live can bear almost any how."
"Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and go do that, because what the world needs is people who have come alive."
5 Baby-Steps to Look For Purpose
Reflect - Start by identifying what truly captures your attention—think about the activities that make you feel the most alive and fulfilled. Look back at moments when you felt the greatest sense of accomplishment and consider what you were doing at those times. Clarify your core values by writing down the beliefs and principles that guide your decisions and define what matters most to you.
Explore - Engage in new experiences, whether through different fields, hobbies, or projects, to discover what resonates with you. Have conversations with people in various careers and industries to learn from their journeys and see what sparks your interest. Take the Leap.
Serve - Find a problem that compels you and explore ways you can contribute to solving it, as ‘purpose’ and ‘service’ are relational. Offer your time and skills through volunteering or helping others without expecting anything in return—this will be revelatory in some way. Pay attention to what people naturally seek your advice or help with to find where to start.
Align – While serving, truly reflect and pray on how best your skills can be put to service with the utmost upward aim. If you serve and align yourself with the truth, the next step will reveal itself to you. Small, yet substantial steps seem to be the path to meaning.
Repeat - Regularly reassess your journey and remain open to all possibilities through a spirit of humility, as your purpose is alive and ever-evolving. Stay receptive to new opportunities and experiences, as each one can refine your path. Most importantly, keep taking action!
