Verse I Like:

“for we walk by faith, not by sight.”

Weekly Dose

Courage is clearly demonstrated in the presence of fear. Faith is clearly demonstrated in the presence of doubt.

It seems that the virtues of courage and faith manifest by the commitment we make in not allowing our actions to be altered by fear and doubt.

Fear and doubt have to be recognized—we have to give the devil his due. But they are to be overcome.

We will feel fear, but we are not to be afraid. We will experience doubt, but we are not to become doubtful.

Courage and faith are choices. They move us forward despite the very real possibility of failure.

We act as if.

Quotes I Like:

"Courage is fear holding on a minute longer."

— George S. Patton

"Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm."

— Winston Churchill

"Relying on God has to begin all over again every day as if nothing had yet been done."

— C. S. Lewis

Mane Message

One of my favorite stories from Greek mythology is the tale of Orpheus.

He is the greatest poet and musician in all of Ancient Greece.

After the death of his wife, Eurydice, Orpheus journeys into the Underworld. His music is so beautiful that Hades agrees to an extraordinary request.

Eurydice may return with him to the world of the living on one condition.

Orpheus must climb out of the underworld, Eurydice will follow him, but he must not look back to ensure she is there.

As they begin the long climb out of the darkness, Orpheus walks in silence. He cannot see Eurydice. He cannot hear her footsteps. Somewhere along the journey, doubt begins to whisper.

What if the gods deceived you? What if she isn't really behind you? What if she can’t keep up?

Moments before reaching the surface, Orpheus turns to look.

In an instant, Eurydice disappears forever.

The fact that this is a myth is beside the point. It captures something deeply human.

Doubt often arrives just before the finish line.

In Christianity, there is not a promise that we will never experience fear or uncertainty. In fact, many of Scripture's greatest figures wrestled with both. The difference is that faith is not measured by what we feel, but by what we choose to do despite those feelings.

Paul writes, "For we walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Corinthians 5:7).

Faith does not necessarily require perfect certainty. It requires faithful obedience.

There will be moments when fear tells us to retreat, when doubt urges us to abandon what we know to be true, and when we desperately want proof before taking another step.

Those moments do not define us.

Our response does.

Like Orpheus, we will all hear doubt's voice. We are called to keep doing what ought to be done.

So, I will keep telling myself, “Walk in faith. Walk in faith. Walk in faith.”

Weekly Ponder

After taking a courageous action, for how long can I fight back the doubt?

What would obedience look like if I stopped demanding guarantees?
